Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation
Welcome to the Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation (BJEF), where preserving and protecting the wonders of Busselton Jetty’s marine environment drives everything we do.
Established to ensure the future of our marine and coastal environments, BJEF is dedicated to education, conservation, and research.
Busselton Jetty is home to a thriving and complex ecosystem of temperate and subtropical marine life. Many species are endemic to the South West, and found nowhere else in the world
Marine ecosystems are facing increasing challenges, and we need your help to safeguard them.
The Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation plays a critical role in protecting our unique coastal environment, ensuring it remains a place of discovery and wonder for future generations. Busselton Jetty Inc. recognises its responsibility to promote sustainable business practice and redirects 3% of annual profits to the Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation’s initiatives. While this helps us towards our goals, we could not achieve all our valuable programs and initiatives without the generous support of donors like you.
Now, more than ever, your support is crucial.
We invite you to join us in our mission. Your support can make a tangible difference in preserving ocean health in a changing world. Dive into our journey and discover how you can help.
Act now to help us protect the marine and coastal environments that make Busselton Jetty a unique and enchanting destination.
What does the Busselton Jetty Environment foundation do?
Conservation & Protection
At the heart of Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation’s mission is the conservation and protection of Busselton Jetty’s vibrant ecosystems.
From the artificial reefs created by our Underwater Sculpture Park and the full length of the Jetty, to the surrounding seagrass meadows, we are committed to safeguarding the diverse marine life that calls this area home.
Our projects include habitat restoration, seabird rescues, and protecting biodiversity.
Education & Awareness
We believe that fostering a deep connection between people and nature is key to long-term conservation success.
Through our educational programs, workshops, and community events, we aim to inspire a new generation of ocean stewards.
Participants learn about the fascinating marine world, the value of sustainable practices, and how they can contribute to preserving our oceans.
“In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught.” -Baba Dioum, 1968.-
Research & Innovation
Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation partners with scientists, universities, and environmental organisations to study and protect our unique underwater world.
Our monitoring programs and research initiatives explore everything from reef regeneration to the abundance of local species. By advancing our understanding of these ecosystems, we can develop innovative solutions to the environmental challenges we face.
Visitors are encouraged to participate in the scientific process by contributing observations from their visit to citizen science projects like iNaturalist, Redmap, and CoastSnap!
Community Engagement
Community is at the heart of everything we do. We work closely with local schools, businesses, and residents to promote environmental stewardship and foster a sense of shared responsibility for our natural surroundings.
Our Jetty Crew Youth Leadership program offers local students’ hands-on opportunities to participate in conservation projects, beach clean-ups, and training workshops, empowering them to become leaders of marine stewardship.
Sustainability
Busselton Jetty is committed to sustainable business practice. From small steps like providing water fountains and encouraging reusable bottles, to our iconic solar-powered Jetty train, to our goal of becoming a carbon-neutral attraction by 2025, Busselton Jetty is committed to ongoing improvements for the benefit of our planet.
Visitors can also contribute by offsetting the emissions from their visit through our partnership with Everclime, supporting the Human-Induced Regeneration project at Yuin Station in the Shire of Murchison. Together, we are fostering a greener future, ensuring that the natural beauty of Busselton Jetty can be enjoyed sustainably for generations to come.
Busselton Jetty uses the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals to assess our progress and to guide our goals for a better future.
Busselton Jetty has been eco-certified with Ecotourism Australia since 2003, achieving Green Leader in 2020. Our work to be environmentally, socially and economically sustainable has led us to being accredited both as an Advanced Ecotourism Operator and Climate Action Certified business.
Did you know?!
The Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation facilitates a number of coastal (and underwater!) cleanups each year in the South West. At our 2023 Injidup Remote Area Cleanup, our volunteer team removed approximately 100kgs of marine debris from the coastline, comprising of around 2577 pieces of litter, of which a staggering 94% were plastic!!
Data from each cleanup is logged with the Australian Marine Debris Initiative Datababse, helping to inform management decisions to prevent marine pollution.
