While the weather dictates some of our daily operations—whether our beloved Little Red Train can venture out or if the Underwater Observatory opens—there are magical moments that make braving the chill worthwhile. Picture yourself witnessing breathtaking sunsets that paint the sky in hues of orange and pink or rising early to catch the serene beauty of a winter sunrise.

The observatory may close on low visibility days to ensure you get the best value from your visit, but don’t let that deter you. On the days its open, winter can transform the underwater view into a fascinating display of nature’s power. On some winter days, you might even spot Cecilia, our favourite New Zealand Fur Seal, who loves to seek shelter by the observatory windows when the open ocean gets rough. Plus, our winter tours offer added excitement with Virtual Reality goggles, allowing you to explore the underwater world even when conditions aren’t ideal.

The Little Red Train, with its charming all-weather blinds, brings joy to children and adults alike, providing a cozy and warm ride along the Jetty. Kids are thrilled as they board the iconic train, their faces lighting up with excitement as they settle in for the journey. The Marine Discovery Centre is Busselton’s Newest family experience

And if you’re looking for an indoor adventure, our Marine Discovery Centre is open every day, offering an immersive experience that’s perfect for families and visitors of all ages. Explore the wonders of our marine parks and oceans through life-size projections, drive a virtual underwater submarine, or let the kids play in a sea grass habitat. The Centre is an interactive space for discovery, learning, and play, making it a fantastic winter activity.
