Busselton Jetty Sandcastle Competition – Rules & Conditions

1. Eligibility

• Open to all ages.
• Teams may consist of up to 6 participants, maximum.

2. Registration

• All participants must register prior to the event at the registration desk in the Marquee, beachside of the Busselton Lifesaving Clubrooms.
• Entry is free

3. Competition Area

• Sandcastles must be built within the marked competition zone on the beach.

4. Materials

• Only natural environmentally friendly beach props, sand and water to be used.
• NO single use plastics, glitter, tinsel props are to be used.
• Tools such as buckets, spades, and carving instruments are allowed.
• All props to be removed and taken home by competitors, after competition ends.

5. Time Limit

• Building time:10.00am – 11.30am
• Judging will commence immediately after time expires.

6. Judging Category Criteria

• Most Creative – Attention to fine details, textures, finishing touches, use of natural materials, artistic flair.
• Best Architecturally – Structurally stable, craftmanship, balanced and proportional, intricate layout- e.g. arches, bridges
• Most original – Imaginative, unusual theme or concept, different twist to the normal sandcastle ideas.
• Marine theme – Recognisable marine or ocean-related concept (e.g., sea creatures, coral reefs, ships, waves)?
• Judges’ choice – Teamwork, organisation, timeframe and overall appeal.

7. Safety

• Participants must always ensure safe behaviour.
• No digging holes deeper than 30cm for safety reasons. Wet sand can collapse and large holes may create a trip hazard for other beach users.
• Watch for incoming surf: Large or unexpected waves can knock people over, especially children.
• Supervise children closely: Especially near water or when digging.
• Use age-appropriate tools: Avoid sharp or heavy objects.

8. Sun and Heat Protection

• Use sunscreen and reapply regularly
• Wear hats and protective clothing
• Take breaks in shade and stay hydrated

9. Environmental Responsibility

• All sandcastles must be dismantled after judging.
• No littering: leave the beach as you found it.
• Do not remove live plants and animals from their natural habitat for props.

10. Prizes

• Prizes will be awarded for Most Creative, Best Architecturally, Most Original, Best Marine theme, and Judges Choice.
• Winners announced at the Busselton Jetty Marquee, beachside of the Busselton lifesaving Clubrooms from 12.00pm.

11. Conditions

• The organizers reserve the right to cancel or modify the event due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
• By entering, participants agree to allow photos/videos for promotional purposes.
