Cerys Heyring’s addition to the Busselton Jetty Underwater Sculpture Park and Artificial Reef Project is the ‘Bronze Mermaid’. This sensational sculpture, that is now part of the array of underwater sculptures at Busselton Jetty, measures approximately 3.2 metres long by 2 metres wide and is 1 tonne.
The face and body of the mermaid have been constructed mostly from bronze, allowing for fine detail, strength, and weight. The hair and tail fluke have been constructed from metal and varying mesh pattern gauges to provide rigidity and support marine growth.
What makes the ‘Bronze Mermaid’ unique is her humpback whale tail instead of a traditional fish tail – a truly amazing addition by Cerys that will maximise the potential for marine life growth by creating a larger surface area for corals and sponges to attach to.
Cerys is a local artist with a passion for creating large bronze sculptures. She has previously created the ‘Yallingup Surfer Man’, a sculpture more than 8 feet tall and 3 metres long. Her ‘Bronze Mermaid’ definitely brings a bit of softness to our Underwater Sculpture Park!
