Melanie Maclou’s addition to the Busselton Jetty Underwater Sculpture Park and Artificial Reef Project is ‘Stella the Stingray’. Measuring at 7m long by 4.7m wide, and weighing 2.5 tonnes, this piece of art is a smooth stingray replica that has been made from over 1300 steel pipes fabricated together over the span of 2 months!
Melanie’s decision to use pieces of pipe (ranging from 200mm – 600mm) within her design has created hundreds of individual marine habitats and it didn’t take long for some octopus to move in.
Based in Fremantle, Melanie has been an international public artist for more than 17 years – often taking inspiration from nature and describing her sculptures as a “subtle invitation to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us”.
Melanie specialises in creating large-scale artwork made of steel, aluminium, and concrete with her work exhibited across the state. Melanie also has another sculpture submerged as part of the Coogee Beach Dive Trail.
